Realized I am not in the mood for the book of this length and this setting, but I might come back to it some day.

Was it predictable? Yes. Was it utterly delightful? Also yes!

This book is really really difficult for me to rate. Here’s the thing;
The zookeeping and animal care parts are wonderful, heartfelt, made me tear up multiple times. 4.5āļø at least, that part. I really wish we could’ve stuck to that.

But the book is at least 2/3 romance, and said romance is 2.5āļø, max. Despite what the book tries to tell you, Connor
, if he hadn’t been lying, still, somehow,
treated Aila better than Luciana ever did. That situation is going to be so toxic. Your choices are your own, but I could personally never forgive Luciana for some of the things she did and said to Aila, if it had been me, and none of the ā€œexplanationsā€ given are anywhere near forgiveable exceptions. We don’t even get one for the worst offense, laughing at her anxiety attack, yet the author hopes you just kinda forget that. Absolutely not.

I also really did not appreciate the bad autism ā€œrepresentationā€. The author is clearly not autistic herself, and that’s fine, but if you want your main character to be, and for the book to hinge on it this much, you need to do a lot more research and talk to a lot more autistic people, than what was done here.

So we compromise and settle somewhere in the middle for this rating.

Lengthy explanations of environments and creatures. Almost half way through the book and I’m note sure anything has happened. So boring.
