This series is fine… I just have a hard time with YA these days. So much pining! Ugh

Libby/audio.

I really like Darynda Jones. If I were younger, I would give this book more stars.

Darynda Jones is definitely one of my favorite authors! She manages to write these incredible books and put in the perfect amount of everything! Humor, suspense, teenage angst, you name it, she nailed it!
This installment in the series got the mood of the story a little darker. When the scenes were being described I just pictured a darkness in the sky, like a storm is brewing. Which I think is pretty perfect, because that is exactly what happened! The awful guy that decided to summon Satan's second is back and not afraid to raise all hell to get to Lorelei.
I have to say I was shocked at the end of this one. I did not see any of it coming, but of course it was well-written and thought out and I loved it all! The characters are so believable and relatable and I find myself just stuck in this story, and happily so! This is just another great addition to this series and further proves that Darynda Jones is amazing!

Lorelei McAlister, high school student and the last female descendent of the prophet Arabeth, is soon going to have to save the world from an invasion of demons. How? She has no idea. She's still struggling with the recently resurfaced memory of her parents' death when she was six--the day demons first broke through into this world, and Satan's second-in-command, Malak-Tuke, took up residence in her body.

Luckily for Lorelei, she's got some help in the form of a half-human/half-angel protector, Cameron; her best friends Brooklyn & Glitch; Jared, the super-sexy Angel of Death her grandparents won't let her date; and a network of church members who believe in the prophesies of Arabeth. Plus, she's just discovered she has the power to go inside a photograph to see what was happening in the moments just before it was taken, which is way cool, if not obviously helpful.

Even though Lorelei knows the war is coming soon, her more immediate concern is with the weird way everyone at school is starting to act. What is up with the stares? Even Jared is acting strangely. Her visions become increasingly specific and frightening, making class an ever more dangerous place to go.

I enjoyed book #2 far better than Death and the Girl Next Door. There is still a lot of whining and angst, but the story also gets fleshed out more--missing pieces filled in. The cliffhanger ending had me rushing to my computer to put book #3, Death and the Girl He Loves on hold at the library.

For readers' advisory: story doorway is primary, character secondary. Humorous, snappy dialogue. Heavy petting & teen hormones but no sex. I don't remember any swearing, but I'm writing this review a couple of months after finishing the book, so I can't be certain.

I will just state that all of Darynda's books will get a 5 star rating from me, because she is an amazing author.
I laughed so much during this book, and truly I can't wait until the conclusion of the trilogy. There were a couple parts where the wording and the situation was so funny, that I could hardly breathe from laughing so hard. Each character is so much fun to read about, and it will be interesting to find out what will happen in the third book.
I did not see that ending coming! I totally thought something completely different was going to happened, so kudos for the twist! I love the relationships between each of the characters and how even the seemingly 'little' things are actually rather large!
I feel like Darynda does a fabulous job of getting to the heart of a teen voice, while still making it light enough that the normal teenage angst isn't frustrating to read.

I recommend to all who like paranormal, humorous, romantic, books with a twist.

“It all started with Death, interfering grandparents and some pissy high school students.
Lorelei has some issues to deal with. She has her grandparents controlling her love life. There is this whole save the world thing to deal with. She has high school drama added to with some new pissy attitudes. The love of her life is the Angel of Death and he's no longer interested. She finds out that there is some weird secret society right under her nose. Then she stumbles upon a new skill in her abilities that takes her deeper into the mysteries.
All that and she's only 16.
I enjoyed this second book in the series more than the first. It was darker, and had more bloodshed for sure, but it also had heartbreak. Sad, sad teenage heartbreak. I loved her new talent. I think it's my favorite new skill of the year so far. Totally awesome ! So the book was very good and stayed in the YA zone. I wish it wasn't I'd love this series with more adult issues. It had a few irksome teenage drama-rama moments that didn't fan out for me but they were important for this to be YA. I love the characters this author writes in any age group.
I am going on to book 3 and I can't wait for it.

So excited for the next book in the series!

Liked it a lot....right up until the end. Hopefully the next book is a good fix to what they did at the end of this one.

Death, Doom and Detention is a combination of a paranormal romance and contemporary teenage novel. I suppose every YA paranormal romance fits that description, but it feels particularly pronounced in the Darklight series. That's a compliment, not a criticism. I enjoy the juxtaposition between Lorelei's role as a prophet and her life as a normal girl with friends, homework, and petty high school drama.

In many ways, Death, Doom and Detention is a typical "second book." Jared, Lorelei's hot Grim Reaper/Archangel lover boy is absent for much of the novel. Thankfully, this book avoids the stereotypical love triangle (at least one involving Lorelei). There is one, actually, but it's so brief and fits into the context of the plot that it's understandable.

Lorelei is trying to come to terms not only with the recent revelation that she's a prophet but also that she is possessed by a demon. Plus, Jared is now keeping his distance from her. Like a typical teenager, her parental figures, her grandparents in the case, bear the brunt of her moodiness. It was tempting to pass her off as being whiny to two people who have her best interests at heart, but if my family had hidden such things from me and discouraged my boyfriend's attentions, I'd be rather peeved as well. I thought she was realistically written.

The highlight of this series for me continues to be Brooklyn, Glitch, and Cameron. Jared is a hot sexy angel guy who is the perfect combination of dangerous and utterly devoted lover, but his is just not the personality that sets my heart a-beating. To each her own. I am much more into the dark, loner, angry protector type that is Cameron. I picture him being rather emo and goth, which I know is not correct. I love his sarcasm and the tension between him and Jared. Glitch and Brooklyn are super fun best friend characters. They remind me of puppies - Brooklyn is a perky toy poodle and Glitch is something goofy like a cocker spaniel. They are always at Lorelai's side and know just what to say to lighten the mood - both for Lorelai and the reader.

While Jared is absent for large swaths of the book, this isn't a novel where the action dulls without the lead guy's presence. Lorelai and her friends encounter numerous danger with and without Jared. Plus, the mystery of his disappearance drives a large part of the book. The book is never an uber-pageturner, but it also never drags. A nice comfortable pace.

I only have a few criticisms. First, an overuse of the word "heck." It fits Lorelai, being the granddaughter of a preacher, but a few more swear words from the other characters would be more realistic (to the characters' credit, there are a few) - and this is from a person who does not like reading a lot of swearing in books. Second, and this is admittedly petty, I hate it when people don't use the serial comma/Oxford comma. It should be "Death, Doom, and Detention." Nerd alert - sorry.

All in all, Death, Doom and Detention is a fun continuation of the Darklight series. I'm excited to read the third installment and have put Ms. Jones's adult series even higher on my TBR list. A recommended read!
