I don't know if I am any the wiser after finishing His bloody project than when reading the first pages.
Was Macre an intelligent man with low social skills and a childlike mind or was he a brutal murderer of humans as well as animals. I still can't say for sure.
I feelt like one of the jury members, jumping back and forth between condemnation and considering Macre's possible innocence.

I can not, for the life of me understand all the praise this book received.
For me, It was just dull, and pretentious. I only stuck with it hoping that SOMETHING would happen that would make it worth reading.
That didn't happen, and I now wish I had spent my time reading something else.

It was just good. I liked it, didn't love it, and I probably wouldn't recommend it or re-read it

Couched within a whydunit, but really a piece of historical fiction about the rural lives of Scottish crofters, Victorian attitudes to mental illness and the judicial system of the times. It is safe and unexperimental with language, but intriguingly structured. A very engaging read

His bloody project
Rate : 3.5
This book was hard for me to review .
The writing is beautiful the author succeeded to transfer me to another era and was written like a movie or mini series scenario .
Until the end of the book it makes me question the sanity of Rodrick and I still can not make my mind ! .
The trail kinda dragged much to me and was repetitive in many points .
Some parts where quite predictable and some was VERY important yet was left unanswered and that frustrated me .
I loved/kinda disliked this books

My first foray into the Booker short-list for this year, and one I took some time getting into.
I caught a horrid lurgy and was too crook to bother reading for a few days, but once I did get into it, I couldn't get my nose out.
This is quite simply a cracking read, with all of the skill of a literary crime novel, plus added depth to the story line. The book casts an eye at history, religion and the crippling class distinctions in the Scottish Highlands of the 19th century.
Add to all that a well developed protagonist and a narrative device which keeps the story moving along nicely.
A great read.
