Really good as usual. This whole series is absolute perfection. Our criminal couple here were also really interesting and quite dark and unrepentant! And it ended on a really sweet note, with Robert and Madeline. I almost thought she was going to call off the engagement!

A pleasant read. Not especially challenging. Liked the rather “old-fashioned” setting and tone of the books and the respect for faith. The reader was great with cockney and Scottish accents but I found his upper-class accents a bit overstated and melodramatic. Recommended for light reading.

Oh no!! When I first started listening to this, I missed Sam Dastor, who was the narrator for all the previous books. But Cornelius Garrett was also good - I actually liked his voice for Madeleine Andrews more than Sam Dastor’s, however he made Edward Tallis sound weaker and more petulant than I get the impression he is in the writing.

But narration aside, this was rather a departure from the other railway detective books. I don’t want to say why and ruin it for others yet to read it, but I was agog at the events that occurred when Tallis took a new recruit to a meeting instead of waiting for Robert Colbeck to return from the line of investigation he was pursuing.

There was some interesting character development which I also won’t say too much about, but I’m excited to see how the next book pans out!
