So much fun and really detailed, I learned so much about people I already knew a good deal on and even more about other “bad gays” from history. The book also has a really strong grasp on different threads of academic and cultural discourse and deals with heavy subjects in a really progressive and empathetic way.

interesting commentary on (particularly male) homosexual behavior as an extension of the patriarchy, and the ways in which it's been used as a tool of enforcing status in social, political, and colonial contexts. interesting also to see the cognitive dissonance and acrobatics which allowed men to keep up the behavior and penalize others engaged in it.

I really wanted to love this, but I just didn’t ever feel into it. Readers who read nonfiction more often might enjoy it more. To be fair, I generally like more of what I would call pop culture/fun nonfiction and I thought this would be more in that genre. I did enjoy how they created chapters for each person and I could feel like I was starting fresh with each new name and had a nice stopping point between reading sprees.
