I love a good nonfiction but this one was just a little too dry in the phrasing for me!

I did not expect to laugh out loud at an academic book, but I did multiple times in reading Bad Gays. Informative and engaging, Miller & Lemmey intertwine the main figures’ stories with historical context and a levity not often found in history books.

DNF Excellent for those who consider themselves "gay" but a little extreme for me. Good history of homosexuality.

The writing did not work for me at all. The story telling style is bland and dry, and the word choice really annoyed me. There is no reason to use fancy pants words (repeatedly, every other sentence)
unless you just want to be insufferable.
This book is very male centric.
I did learn things, but this was, for the most part very, very bland to read, and I do think it's because I just couldn't jive with the writing style.
I'll definitely be going away to do more research on the people in this book because the people themselves and their lives sounded very interesting, but this book just wasn't the best way for me to digest their information.
The narrator also mispronounced a lot of the Japanese words in that chapter, e.g. pronouncing Edo as "iido" instead of "eh-do". You'd think the narrator and the people making the audiobook would've made sure all the pronunciations were correct.
If there is ever a volume 2 of Bad Gays, I hope the writing style is different and I hope there's more people than just mostly men discussed.
