Quippy Marxist, decolonial, and queer theory informed history of the gay rights movement and the construction of homosexuality as a modern identity
Better researched than I expected, but still an extremely broad and simplified account

Oh, look, people from the past failed to live up to my very modern expectations for them. They were bad. God, I want to eyeroll emoji here, and that’s not my style at all.
While looking back and reevaluating our views on historical persons can be a very good thing, this book seems determined to do so in the most negative way possible. That kind of take can work in some formats, but it doesn’t work very well in this book. Here, it comes off as pretentious, dull, and uninteresting.
The lives of the individuals here were widely ranged, but not one of them was dull and uninteresting. I knew that going in, and that probably added to my ultimate disappointment in this book.
I bowed out with about 20% left. Some books you don’t need to finish.

Incredibly eye-opening. It talks about homosexuality, specifically western cis white gay men and the way identities have been impacted by colonialism, racism, nationalism and capitalism as well as by various other factors like class and wealth. It shows insight into how homosexuality has changed over time and what it meant for different historical figures. It also discusses the 'us vs them' attitude that happens between white middle-class gay people and trans people, sex workers, gender non-conforming and more marginalised queer people. A great insight to the more uncomfortable side of queer history but a side that is necessary to know about, especially in regards to modern queer politics. Whilst being very academic and serious, it manages to be funny. My only criticism is the lack of queer women with many of the stories being centred around white gay men.
Loose definition of “bad gays” and where are the women?? This book taught me about a few new interesting queer non-icons but left me wanting more.
