This started strong but I did find some chapters particularly difficult to read in places. It tries to place itself as simultaneously an academic history text but also a wry, arch and accessible popular history book. It doesn't quite manage this balancing act as well as it thinks it does. HOWEVER it was well-researched and made some really interesting points about how we have understood queer identities through history and how the lives of the titular Bad Gays are a lens to understand how we are "a product of history".

It felt like Malcolm Gladwell where the points made are either big leaps or not that profound. I looked at it more as a way to learn about queer people in history, rather than an analysis about said history.
