I just couldn't get into this book. I tried a number of times, some of the text was interesting there were just too many dense sections that caused me grief to try and read. I might come back to this later but for now I'm setting it a side.

This was a pretty interesting book, and I especially loved the first couple of ‘bad gays’. My only criticism is that I got lost trying to understand their point at times, but that could just be a me thing.

I did not think I’d like it as much as I did tbh, but it was interesting and relevant, and a good look into how white gay men in particular uphold systems of oppression even at their own detriment. Not very diverse in selection of people, but makes sense for the historical patterns it's commenting on.
I found the writing style hard to read and the attempted switches between formal and colloquial language a bit jarring but the information was enough to make up for it mostly

I really have mixed feelings on this one - the chapters on J. Edgar Hoover, Philip Johnson and Margaret Mead were particularly fascinating but it never felt like the authors always knew what they were setting out to achieve. The gays in this book really varied on how 'bad' they were - and to compare Hadrian with Ernst Röhm as if they're both 'bad' people just feels a bit mean, to be honest! I think a better title would have been 'ambiguous gays' given that there's a real mix of different people in this book. I think its also a shame that given its a long-form history, only one of the people covered was a woman, only one was from a non-western background, and the book skews heavily in favour of post-1800 figures. I enjoyed it for the most part, just felt it a bit lacking.
