I enjoyed this a lot as someone who has considerable background knowledge in the history of social movements in the US. I appreciated the work the authors did in tying in less-bad gays (mostly for the interesting stories), but did feel that it distracted from some of the commentary they were making in the rest of the book. While I was initially disheartened with the lack of inclusion of women/more gender queer figures, I think it makes sense for the scope of this book to have used this structure instead.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone seeking to know more about how whiteness and power is/has been weaponized by white queers to marginalize other queer folks. If you aren't willing to challenge your beliefs about gay rights movements and their proximity to whiteness, you probably won't like this book.

An interesting, well researched and passionately written example of how to do popular history right. Would have loved to see a bit more reflection on the choice of selected “bad gays” throughout the book as well, after a while the reader doesn’t remember as well what was detailed in the introduction.

It was too easy for me to get zoned out. And also they didn’t include nearly enough female bad gays. Audiobook has big errors in certain spots but it fixes itself and no information is lost.

This book was a good in execution though not entirely in concept. I enjoyed learning about queer history and the authors do it in an engaging way. I do feel that the idea of centering queer history around "bad gays" got a little trite and tangential. The stories didn't flow together so it didn't feel like a whole book. Overall, enjoyable but not a favorite.
