"The Emperor of Portugallia" is about Jan Andersson from Skrolycka, a crofter in the Swedish countryside, and his deep love for his daughter Klara Gulla. When the parents are forced to pay 200 riksdaler or leave their home, Klara Gulla leaves to work in Stockholm. She does not return, and Jan suffers a psychosis where he slowly transforms himself into the emperor of Portugallia, an imaginary place where he and his daughter can live in wealth and without worries. Through Jan's eyes, we experience despair, hope, and exclusion – not only in the village where he lives but also within his own family.

Jag va väldigt taggad på denna bok, men jag orkade inte. Det va så mycket med den som jag inte hängde med på och jag va förvirrad. Lite kul med Jan men tyckte mest att den va jobbig att läsa. Gamla klassiker är skrivna på ett helt annat sätt en de jag brukar läsa så den får nog enbart så lågt betyg då jag inte är van tyvärr.
