βCome, love, make me better than I was.
Come teach me a kinder way to say my own name.β
Did a fun departure from my usual reading queue and tested out some poetry. Trying to get more into it, and overall I think this was a great start as it was accessible and relevant.
I will say, I think Andrea is too millenial for me and a lot of this pertained to a different era of queer experience and I often found it not relatable. Sometimes a phrase would be so cringey it would pull me out of the entire poem.
But when it hits, it hits. Specifically the poems on what it feels like to not be comfortable in your own body, the dissociation from your own skin, and the idea of the soul missing the flesh; all of that really resonated, and Iβm definitely open to flexing more of my poetry muscles in the future.

worth the price of admission for the Orlando/Pulse poem alone πππππ A solid collection of moving poems for anyone who has experienced grief, othering, and the heartache that is life. LGBTQ+ affirming/relatable.
Andrea Gibson's poetry is much like Mary Oliver's for me... I love it all and, while some poems resonate more than others, it all touches me deeply. While Mary spotlights the natural world, Andrea spotlights humanity. The words they write resonate and feel like the truth. This collection is especially for the LGBTQIA+ community (and its allies) as well as anyone who has struggled with mental health, trauma, and/or anyone who craves connection (to self and others), loves humanity, or has felt bereft in the face of white supremacy, gun violence, etc.
I will read anything and everything they write.
