Ich mag das Setting in einem Gefängnis in Fantasy gerne und finde die Umsetzung in diesem Buch auch gelungen. Das World Building ist plausibel und ereignet sich stückenweise mit dem Fortschreiten der Story. Diese war schon typisch YA, wobei ich Kiva als Protagonistin sehr erfrischend fand. Sie war für mich mit das größte Plus an diesem Buch! Ich mag, dass sie im Gegensatz zu vielen YA-Heldinnen eher rational und vernünftig ist.

Den Plottwist am Ende über ihre Herkunft habe ich auch nicht kommen sehen, wow! Bin jetzt sehr gespannt auf Band 2, wobei ich dadurch auch ihre Reaktion auf Jarens geheime Identität und Fähigkeiten eeetwas übertrieben finde. Außerdem frage ich mich, warum sie sich selbst während der Prüfungen nie mit ihrer Magie geholfen hat?! Ich habe da die ganze Zeit drauf gewartet.

 
Die Prüfungen selbst fand ich okay, ich hatte sie mir beim Lesen der Kurzbeschreibung etwas spektakulärer vorgestellt, aber ehrlich gesagt sind sie auch sehr passend zu dem Setting. 
Insgesamt also für mich, trotz des sehr klassischen YA-Verlaufs, ein überraschender Auftakt zu einer Trilogie, der mich gespannt auf Band 2 macht!

I love a fantasy story with a plot twist and this gives it in DROVES. 

Such a different setting to my usual fantasy reads, with a really intriguing magic system and political setup. This was fast paced and frantic in places, with excellent character introductions and writing. I enjoy how we discovered secrets alongside the FMC, and then some!

Wow. This was SO good!! It was so tense, and I couldn't tell what was going to happen next. And that ending?! I can't wait to read the next one!

Ugh I kind of hated the end, the author just dropped major character twists at the end. I suppose I don’t like the unreliable narrator thing. Feels like important information was deliberately withheld from the reader. Also elements seem to rip of ACOTR

How the hell am I supposed to wait until October for answers to that ending !?
