I think the horror scenes were probably some of the best I've read in awhile, if it had focused more on that angle I think this could have easily been a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, I hated Laney and her interpersonal relationship drama and every time they had their moments of resolving conflict I mostly just skimmed. It felt like I was reading two entirely different stories at some points, and I kept getting taken out of the nervous horror atmosphere that the author did such a good job of writing.

Kisses to the strange thing in the woods, you were my beloved.

I really loved this book and I would have given it five stars, except for the fact that I have lived on lake Superior for some time in my life and there were small details that threw me.

Nothing seems important enough to break other people's immersion, or to mention, except for the fact that there are no indigenous characters in this book and the themes seem to suggest that perhaps there should have been, in place of non-native (white?) main and crucial side characters.

Yup, still good.

3.5. I didn’t see any of it coming, which is fun. It wasn’t the ending I’d hoped for, but that’s a good thing because it wasn’t cliché. It’s not the greatest horror/thriller book, but I was a little tentative about going outside at night while listening and I felt uneasy afterwards. The audiobook was very well narrated. As someone else wrote, this book would make for excellent October reading.

I stayed up well past my bedtime binging this book. Excellent read.

'No one is to blame except nature itself, and that is true than the authorities will ever realize.'

Hemlock Island by Kelly Armstrong was an adventure, but I'm not sure I liked the ending, I was hoping for more in some way. It felt like Walking Dead mixed with a bit of the Lorax, I was not expecting that twist. Overall, this book exceeded my expectations and loved how it was set on Lake Superior.
