Hemlock Island by Kelley Armstrong is a fast paced book. Laney kept her beloved island retreat in her divorce but has to rent it out to afford it. Weird things have been happening on the island and when the latest incident chases off her renters, she and her niece Madison go to investigate. When they arrive, Laney’s ex-husband and sister-in-law, along with an old friend, are there to help. The group becomes stranded on the island and discover they are not alone. Something on the island is killing people. This book is a quick read. A few things are left unanswered. Like what happened in the closet in the guest room. I didn’t find the story scary. I felt like there was strong character development. Overall this was an ok read and I give it 3/5 stars.

i absolutely loved this book, from start to finish. it quickly hooked me in, and if i hadn’t had work, i likely would have finished it in one sitting. i loved the writing, the characters, the dynamics - and i love that the antagonist in this novel isn’t who you think it is.

i picked this up because it was sold to me as the perfect read for spooky season; and i agree with that. this book is right up my alley and i will be rereading it in the future. highly highly recommend.

Writing was average, didn’t love how it ended/the final reveal.  Took a bit of an unbelievable turn.

I'm in the camp of a lot of other reviewers I read after finishing this book. I can't quite put my finger on why this didn't work for me. It was easy to fall into, I read it lightning fast because I was desperate to find out what was happening, and by the time I got a few pages from the end I was worried I wasn't going to find the "whew"moment where everything makes sense. I didn't dislike the story. I just don't think I understood it like the author saw it unfolding as she was writing. 3.5 stars rounded down.
