Be careful who you let into your home…
Hemlock Island by Kelley Armstrong is an isolationist thriller that probably wasn’t sure what it wanted to be…
Hemlock House is a McMansion on Hemlock island out on Lake Superior. There are sometimes campers, but not many folks stay there…other than those renting the property from the owner…
Unfortunately, Laney has been having issues with her property, one of the only momentous of her former marriage. Someone has been vandalizing the property and leaving odd marks around, some seemingly supernatural. The latest incident has her heading out to clean up and figure out who and why someone keeps doing this…
Unfortunately things aren’t always so easy especially when multiple former associates (including her ex husband) turn up out of concern…and it isn’t long before more of them find themselves stranded on the island without a boat…and a dead body recently discovered…
Don’t get me wrong, the first half of this book is pretty solid as the story unfolds and we learn various relationship intrigue along the characters and revelations from the past…
Unfortunately the last 60 pages seems like a speed run to explain and wrap up the story in ways that I felt weren’t properly developed…
I’d prefer to read this book with a more sensible resolution…

Hella good, but it’ll be a while before I visit a cottage again.
It was pretty intense and spooky at times. A little too much gore for my taste, but overall a good story

This book was fantastic! It was fast paced from the start but the set up was easy enough to still know the characters and the dynamics. The storyline was interesting to keep me going and the suspense was definitely killing me! For my first new horror read I was definitely happy.
I loved the nature aspect of it and the ending was not what I suspected it to be but in a good way, it fixated on the horror of humanity and what we are capable of and how it affects the world around us. Still creepy with the whole entity on the island taking revenge, and sad about the deal she had to make, but somehow it was a nice change to a horror ending. Would definitely recommend!
