1999 Man Booker Prize finalist

Professor David Lurie has a steady life; prostitute once a week, classes, cordial relation with ex-wives (two of them). Then he's caught having an affair with a student. But unlike Blue Angel (by Francine Prose), this novel barely begins with the affair, it's what comes after that sets this work apart. This thought-provoking book has our discussion group asking "what, exactly, was the disgrace?"

Spoiler

Was it the affair and it's consequences? The rape of his daughter? The "gall" of the Africans? His inability to change?

4.5 stars. Heavy themes of rape, racism, violence, depression, (white) guilt, animal rights issues, new generation vrs old generation, abortion, shame, feminism, sexism, satyriasis, infidelity...disgrace.
Lots of complexities to unravel in this book. This book would make for excellent discussions in book clubs and literature classes. But I have 1 question: are there any happy South African books out there, w/o stereotypical violence? This book def took a toll on my emotions. Excellent literary fiction nonetheless. Great page turner with intelligent, yet tender prose.
