Adds a lot of depth to the show. If you liked Killing Eve, this is a must read.

Want i

I'm not sure why it took me so long to really finish this book. I think that, in so many ways, it reads like standard Spy literature. This isn't bad, but this was a bit too episodic. I love good episodic reads and by the end of it it tied it together for a continuation, but it felt a bit flat. Eve and Villanelle are intriguing figures but this first book didn't solidify them enough. Still, it's kept me wanting a bit more so I think I will check out the other two entries, so far, into the book series. I do like that our leads are women, and one of which is a Queer character of sorts but it often comes off as very, eh, male gazey. I've been told of this from a friend of mine who actually loves these books and the TV series (which I am told is quite good) but even they said the first book is a bit rough and that it does improve by the next two books. I was told that Luke Jennings seems to have listened and discussed his characters with more women and Queer individuals since this first entry, but that remains to be seen from my end. There is a particular bit of Transphobia that I wasn't super fond of, but my friend also told me of this a bit ahead of time too but it didn't make it any less unpleasant.

That aside, it's not bad but it fell short of my expectations. I naturally, though, want to see if it does improve and unlike my reading of "The Magicians" in which I was WAY too kind giving it 4 stars, I did like this a bit better as I found the story gripping in places and noticed it trying to do new things with a genre that needs a bit of newness. I liked the focus on Fashion, music, and sexuality and the dynamics of Sex. I liked how it cobbled a variety of ideas and themes that while not perfectly executed, could be expressed better in later books or, as I hear, in the television show. I think partly I'm invested is that I want to see where Eve and Villanelle go from this point on and where their already intriguing "relationship" in this cat and mouse game are set to go.

So ultimately, it's not the best but I see a lot more potential here and since these are not very long books, I don't really feel too bad about starting up the others since they're easy and quick enough reads on their own. I do know this diverges from the TV show at a point, too, but Luke Jennings seems a bit chill about it nonetheless. Still, it could've been better with it's politics than it was but, eh, we'll see. We shall see.
