This book was very slow paced. A bit boring at times, but good enough to finish.

I really love Kearsley's books and this one pulled me in quickly. I really liked Verity right from the start, and found myself laughing as she struggled with the nuances of the Scottish language and thought the previous and current tension in the love relationships were developed well. But the way the mysteries unfolded, the presentation of magic, the mystical elements of the story were my favorite by far. I felt the eerie feelings along with Verity. Just so very well written.

The book was good at the end but it took a lot of time getting there! There were many interesting facts about archeology and Roman history. I thought the story was disjointed and the 3 months in which it took place dragged on without much action. As usual, I wanted to know more about each character’s back history. There is so much potential for this story but instead it just scratched the surface. I love Kearsley’s writing style though so will read more by her.

A ghost. A hot man in a kilt. A mystery. Pretty much the perfect book.

Susanna Kearsley books all do a great job at immersing you in an idyllic UK setting - Eyemouth, Scotland in this book - and are centered on an independent young woman, usually with an interesting job. Her books all have an unbelievable element to them - this time it was a ghost. Any spooky or suspenseful element is pretty gently handled.

I've had this book on my Kindle forever, and I finally got around to reading it. I loved it. It's very reminiscent of Mary Stewart and Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels. It's got a smart, independent heroine, a charming Scottish town, an archaeological dig, a mystery, and a little romance. What more could you ask for?
