I loved this little novella, whose word use was so fun and descriptive, and whose descriptions of life in a family of working poor felt so real and gritty. It felt like I was 14 again, watching the other kids and wondering who would survive, who would get pregnant too early, who would get beat up, and how the girl with the scuffed up brown saddle shoes could stand to show herself in public.
Written in short vignettes, each "chapter" is no longer than three pages long. A quick read (read it in an airplane, bus trip, or any other hour) that is worth the time and attention from each reader.

maybe if i had read the entire thing when I was younger I would have appreciated it more. it's relatively simple in language/structure. i think there's more nuance to living in a place you dont't belong, and I was disappointed to say the least
