It was a decent book. I usually like books written in verse or discontinuous sentences because sometimes they hit hard. But, they need to have continuity in terms of plot, which this book lacked. I did like the general idea of the book but the stories jumped back and forth so much that I lost track of what was going on at some point and couldn't connect to any of the characters, especially Esperanza. I do like short chapters but only when they are impactful. It's possible that I didn't really get the point of the book because I couldn't directly relate to it but I think the writing style was not for me.

sweet sweet melody of a book. I love the musicality, it reads like poetry (“bow-tied fruit flies,” “Darius who doesn’t like school, who is sometimes stupid and mostly a fool”, “next week she comes over black and blue and asks what can she do”)

Her figures of speech are my favorite, they make me think so intently about objects, things, everything
“They don’t walk like ordinary dogs but keep and somersaults like an apostrophe and comma,” “ceiling smooth as wedding cake,” “clean as paper before the poem,” “she looked out the window her whole life the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow”

The simplest lines that blow you away out of nowhere. I am still thinking of:

“You all see that cloud, that fat one there? Darius said. See that? Where? That one next to the one that look like popcorn. That one there. See that. That’s God, Darius said. God? somebody little asked. God, he said, and made it simple.”
