I really liked the writing style. I just wish the book was longer.

I think if I read this when I was 10 I probably would have given it 5 stars. Make your children read this for sure. Unfortunately, since I didn't' read it until 23, it doesn't have the same appeal and the writing kinda irritates me if I'm honest...I'm NEVER gonna be a fan of authors omitting quotation marks.

"I am an ugly daughter. I am the one nobody comes for.
Nenny says shewon't wait herwhole life for a husband to come and get her, that Minerva's sister left her mother's house by having a baby, but she doesn't want to go that way either. She wants things all her own, to pick and choose. Nenny has pretty eyes and it's easy to talk that way if you are pretty.
My mother says when I get older my dusty hair will settle and my blouse will learn to stay clean, but I have decided not to grow up tame like the others who lay their necks on the threshold waitinf for the ball and chain.
In the movies there is always one with red lips who is beautiful and cruel. She is the one who drives the men crazy and laughs them all away. Her power is her own. She will not give it away.
I have begun my own quiet war. Simple. Sure. I am one who leaves the table like a man, without putting back the chair or picking up the plate."

Such beautiful quotes in this book:

"In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting."

Rich description materializes in each line. I highly encourage checking this out to see how Cisneros masterfully juxtaposes "Esperanza" or hope with sadness, which serves as a common thread through this collection of vignettes.

The last book I read this year, and it was so lovely. Heartbreaking, too. Definitely beautiful. My favorite vignette was “bums in the attic”. ❤️

I'm sure this is a charming book to those who enjoy this style. I have nothing against the story or the writing, I just don't usually enjoy the vignette style of storytelling. For me, I feel like it doesn't give me a chance to learn anything about the characters, and so I don't come to care for them. But if you enjoy novels told more as a series of short stories than as a standard novel, I think you will enjoy this one.
