I can see why people love this book so much. The characters and their relationships suck you right in. I plan to read the next book right away, and I don't want my concerns to be premature, but I am paying attention to how this will end. At this stage though, I do love Joey, but I don't think he's realistic. A teenage boy being able to handle 4 kids, school, a steady job, sports, a girlfriend, constant beatings and injuries, and a drug addiction doesn't seem likely. I haven't read Shannon's books, so maybe she does more than it seems to help out at home, but even then, he seems to be doing a lot, and not failing at it. All the while being high? I don't know. It's borderline romanticization, but we shall see how this story ends.

What an emotional rollercoaster. These two are so toxic for each other, and yet I was rooting for them the whole time. This book feels like every angsty CW show of the early 2000, and I'm living for it. Also, I just want to hug Joey and tell him everything will be OK.

this is by far my favourite boys of tommen book and the only one that hasn’t took me approx a month to read. when i read the first two books i immediately knew i would absolutely love joey and aoife, but jesus christ i was not ready for this roller coaster of a book. the entire storyline of joey’s addiction reminded me so much of the movie beautiful boy, and there were so many quotes in this book that genuinely made my heart hurt. chloe’s writing has definitely improved from the first two books in this one and it’s very obvious in the storytelling and pacing which i think was a huge improvement from binding 13 and keeping 13. i have heard redeeming 6 is much more heartbreaking than this and i am not ready at all omg.

few things:
- i loved the johnny and gibsie cameo i miss them so bad y’all esp gibsie
- aoife’s way of talking to joey is soooo sweet. like yes their relationship is toxic in this book but it’s clear she knows how to navigate communication which is so refreshing to me because joey’s dad obviously does not
- i was a little mad at both joey and aoife at several times in this book but goddddd it’s hard to stay mad at them for long

honorable mention: i feel like no one talks about ollieeeee. he’s actually my son and the way him and tadgh speak is so sweet guys i cant.

why is this series ACTUALLY growing on me. Help.

I think this is so much better than binding and keeping, and I enjoyed those. I just liked not having to listen to how the FMC was malnourishes and childlike whilst simultaneously the sexiest thing in the room.
Aoife was such a breath of fresh air, a unique female lead who combined unapologetic femininity with strength.

It’s not peak literature but it’s compulsively readable and had me choked up at a few times - Tadgh’s Christmas present for one.

I really enjoyed this book and the push and pull of the relationship throughout the book. That being said I do wish the series was written in time order because I feel like we got a much bigger picture of the home life from Joey’s pov compared to the limited information in the 13’s. But I did enjoy the book and am excited to continue this series.
