I absolutely loved the premise, and Jeff VanderMeer's writing is definitely something I need more of in my life. How could I not enjoy a post-apocalyptic novel that involves strange creatures and explores the relationship between humans and nature? It had some pacing issues, and I actually wished the book was longer so it could go deeper into the characters and themes, but overall this was a wonderful and unique quick read.

DNF. This story was just too bizarre and simultaneously humdrum for me. I'm halfway through and can't bring myself to pick it back up.

This book made me miss my childhood. Or perhaps more accurately my need to find monstrous innocence and heroic meaning in everyday horror that I had swirling around back then. I remember what the world was like before The Company, before all of this. There was less stuff to carry around. This book made me want to play with poisonous plants and sharp rocks. This book made me afraid of my lunch.

Not in the best place to be reading maybe. Hurricane Irma, father-in-law in the hospital. Utter exhaustion. My MO as of late.

Never got very into this, liked the concepts and overall thoughts a lot, but didn't feel like it fully executed itself for me.
