this is more a character study than a novel of ideas, which i don't think is vandermeer's strong suit. he slips into generalities and obfuscation too easily, which takes the piss out of the incisiveness he's able to develop through rachel

Probably closer to 3.5. It’s fun, enjoyable, but extremely Fictional Story and I’m not sure how long it will
stay with me.

A truly unique, remarkable, curious and deeply odd book. At times a bit hiccup-y to read (certain turns of phrase don't translate to written) but the journey is incredible. More Vandermeer is on my horizon!
