Phenomenal book! I found Reverend and Mrs. Price to be much like my own parents, and reading this was very healing in a lot of ways. Great discussions of racism, colonialism, and healing from trauma, among other important topics. Kingsolver's prose is beautiful, as usual!

I first read this twenty years ago and it has stayed with me as a powerful story of hubris and attendant woe on a personal and global level. I seem to have forgotten the depth of characterization and I responded to a couple of the main characters with disgust. I think this is a book that all Americans should read so we learn about our secret history. Great book but hard to read in an emotional sense.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I’ve read it three different times at very different points in my life and have always taken something new from it. It’s an incredible commentary on evangelism and imperialism.

Kingsolver truly nailed it with TPWB! The slower pace was different for me, but offered a lot of character development (both good and bad) that was very enjoyable and fulfilling to see. The different perspectives Kingsolver presents in each section give way to unreliable narrators and piecing together each character from their own perspective, and their family’s. I wish some of the side characters had been developed more, such as Anatole, yet these characters did provide a lot to the plot and the Price girls’ development. Looking back having finished the book, there is so much I never picked up on- Kingsolver seems to make an effort to bring everything full circle and relate to ideas throughout the entirety of the novel.
