His lips brushed hers, cold, yet she knew he gave her all the warmth he had. “If I could love, I would love you,” he said softly. After a moment she smiled. “Why is that strange?”

“If you could love,” she said simply, feeling as if she had taken an enormous step away from herself, and into the complex world, “you would not choose me to love.”

Sometimes I’m scared to reread old favorites, in case they don’t live up to my memories and lose their place in my heart. But The Changeling Sea holds up and then some, I might even love it more now. Just a beautifully written story of wild magic, the restless sea, and heartbreak.

Short novel that I did not read quickly because it seemed to pull me into it's world where I wanted to linger and look and stay with the things that were occurring. It seemed to need me to reflect.

This is a story about a girl and her mother who are lost to memories,
a prince, a king, a mage, a sea dragon
and the sea herself.

If you love fantasy and magic and the sea and you have experienced the loss of someone you love and have felt the heart's desire to seek revenge on that which took the thing you love away, then you will find the magic in this story, and yes, even the truth.

So. Much. Book-love. One of the most beautiful sea fairy tales I've read in a very long time.

I am not sensible about McKillip. I love her gorgeous prose, her mysterious worlds, her characters. If you like stories that tie everything up neatly and explain every little detail, you won't like McKillip, but I love her stories beyond reason.

This is an old-school fairy tale but written in the modern day, and I loved it. It's more of a novella than a novel, but it's beautiful crafted and really pulls you into it. I'd love to hear it read aloud, it seems like the kind of book that's made to be read by the fireside with the sea crashing outside.

I loved this book a lot. Despite its brevity, it feels like a complete story. It feels so much like a Ghibli movie, a girl curses the sea for taking her father and making her mother fall into a depressed enchantment with the sea, and her fate is intertwined with the local prince and and what lies in the ocean.

Nice writing voice, engaging dialogue, but...

...dreadfully gratuitous melancholy. It shouldn't take me 4 days to read a 130 page book, but seriously, it's hard when the story could be paced much faster and not revolve around the sea and how sad everyone is all the time. I've heard from many that McKillip is a master of the genre, but I don't know that I would put aside time to delve more into her work. It's not because she can't write well; in fact at times the language can be quite beautiful. It's more that she can't prioritise well. There's so much sadness instead of mystery solving that the intrigue is left watered down and my suspension of disbelief coughs, sputters, and dies every few paragraphs. And that puts me off.

Stunning writing, as per usual.
