Reviews with content warning for Rape - Паперовий палац

Read it for book club. Not my favorite. Found it to be depressing. On a positive note, I will say the way it was written was captivating with all the nature that was described. And the flash backs kept me reading just to figure out the story. But I would not have chosen to read this personally, my preference is for action/fantasy or something lighthearted and this was just a sad story that I didn’t like the ending of.

Whilst getting through the book room longer than anticipated, I really enjoyed the experience of it- it’s always a good sign when you aren’t checking page numbers whilst reading. The content was challenging in a number of ways, and I’m not sure what to make of the ending just yet- it feels like it needs time to reflect and percolate on. Immediate thoughts were that the ending felt a little disappointing, but in many ways I can also see how I would have felt that way if any different version of the ending had arisen (trying to avoid spoilers!)

The writing was a pleasure to read, and I particularly enjoyed the warm representation of familial love and relationships within the immediate family, with its ups and downs, whilst illustrating how trying to care for family could affect your decision making in an attempt to protect them.

My rating has NOTHING to do with the quality of the prose. In fact, the writing was beautiful! However, I HATED this book for the way it depicted childhood abuse (and even r*pe). I was SO uncomfortable for the majority of this book. I sped up the audio speed just to finish it faster, I’m sorry. And the decisions the MC made??? Absolutely not.
