This was a really beautifully written book which tackled some really dark themes. This isn’t normally the kind of book that I’d go for (hence the lower rating) and I initially struggled to get into it, however I can definitely see the appeal for others. I struggled to connect and relate to the characters (though this may be because I’m not the target audience) however the setting was very vividly imagined and described beautifully, and the book had an interesting structure that kept me reading, as the narrator continues to switch back and forth between her childhood and life leading up to the present, and the present day itself. The ending was a little underwhelming, but all in all it was an okay read, and one that I can understand why it is so popular.

I found all of the main characters selfish and unlikeable. The story jumps around between past and present and includes unnecessary graphic descriptions of child sexual abuse and sexual content. The was not invested in the outcome of the decision the main character was deliberating.

Let’s make the main characters childhood as traumatizing as possible then have a climax that is meaningless because you’re numb to trauma by then and then finish off with an underwhelming resolution and conclusion. You can tell the author writes for HBO (not a compliment)

i definitely enjoyed reading this and i love love loved the style of writing. i’ve never really read anything like this before but i’m so glad i stuck with it. the ending however is unsatisfying and there was so much more i wanted Elle to reveal that she didn’t.
i can’t believe she allowed her mother to believe leo r@ped her for 30 years?! that just seems unforgivable considering it stopped her spending her life with the man she loved. the mum was irritating. i want to marry Peter. i empathise with Elle a lot because of all she has been through but i still couldn’t bring myself to like her. Also it’s left unclear whether she chooses Peter or Jonas in the end which i thought was the whole point of the book.
i thought the fact she had so many different adults in her life was relatable (dwight and nancy, dixon, leo etc) because that is what it’s like with separated parents. i would read more from this author but i would have less expectations for the ending maybe.
