These Violent Delights

Crime mystery with a SMALL side of romance and a heaping serving of murder.

Positives: The ending was a whole load of gasps and internal screaming, especially for chpt 36. Those 6 words alone were a rollercoaster.

Aside from that, the side characters felt kinda meh. They were cool and had their quirks but felt very disposable/similar.

I’m gonna be so real. I just hate that it’s a “retelling” and the names are all basically the same. I just want to KINDA pretend it’s not a story I’ve already read.

It got to where I just didn’t care what was happening anymore and didn’t keep track of who was doing what.

Roma and Juliette’s chemistry developed perfectly throughout the book. They were once lovers before the events of These Violent Delights, and I was super intrigued to see what happens next. This book was filled with mystery, suspense and horror.

The action in the book was mindblowing and intensely suspenseful. The writing flowed seamlessly, perfectly sustaining the scene’s tension while illuminating each character.

The slow burn in this book was top-notch; the chemistry and tension between Roma and Juliette were well-written. They worked together seamlessly after setting aside their differences when a mysterious illness began to spread among each gang.

I also love that Roma and Juliette have demonstrated they are the strong leaders everyone could count on. I love Juliette Cai so much! What a brave, strong, independent woman she is! Juliette was such a boss. She took charge of the situation and found ways to solve the mystery madness taking place in the city. She never gave up until she found a solution.

As for Roma, he deeply cares for his family, and he stood up for what’s right. He cared for every single person and didn’t sit around doing nothing. I also love how he never showed weakness when it came to asking for help from Juliette.

The plot throughout this book kept me on the edge of my seat; it was such a page-turner. Especially that Epilogue, my jaw dropped. I cannot wait to read the second book. Chloe Gong has written a brilliant, fast-paced book, and I loved its pace.

If you love an enemies-to-lovers, fast-paced book and a Romeo and Juilet retelling, then this is the book for you!
