The narrator wasn't very good. There was no differentiation between characters - neither in tone nor in manner - so it was difficult to follow who was speaking.
Aside from that, the story was borning. I appreciate the need for context, but more than 2 hours in and nothing has happened? Not for me.

I am a bit confused, I didn’t connect quickly with this book. Took me until 300 pages to actually figure out what the heck was going on. I didn’t feel there was a lot of romance in it, to be honest I think it was a good story but fell flat in some places. I didn’t like the monster element in this!
Although, I did enjoy Romeo as a character and when Juliet said about his mother really intrigued me and I wanted more background with this, it’s a shame it took me so long to read but I enjoyed it in places.
Perhaps the Sequel will be better?

Romeo & Juliet but set in Shanghai in the 1920s. Juliette is a badass gangster. Roma is a Russian gangster. And there's a madness sweeping through the city that drives people to rip out their own throats. Very descriptive. Very dramatic. Very gruesome. Highly recommend!!

i was expecting a lot from this but i was disappointed that i didnt like it :( i reallt reaaaaally wanted to like this book but i just couldn’t. first off, it was really really slow for me and the narration was very much all show and no tell and it was fine until it kept being slow till 300 pages in.
dont get me wrong, the writing is absolutely beautiful but its just that it didnt hit off with me. the two main characters arent exactly my favorite bc juliette was just so whiny and childish that it really put me off and i much preferred the side characters so much more—specifically marshall and benedikt. i gave this a 2 star bc that ending made me want to read the second book but probably not anytime soon bc id have to read the same thing of them chasing a monster all over again :/
