The book is a very nice rendition of Romeo and Juliet, while still containing enough of its own story, which keeps it interesting. I thought the parallels were beautifully crafted, which caused some very cool moments of "OHHH, I know this scene". That being said, it was a bit too gory for me at times and I was a bit disappointed by the ending. I just feel like it would've been better as a standalone book and the second book was a bit forced. I will still read it though.
This was a really fun twist on Romeo and Juliette taking place in 1930s Shanghai . Slow burn enemies to lovers. It also incorporates a lot of politics of the times which was really interesting.
4.5! When I started this I had no idea what to expect, I just knew it was a Romeo & Juliet retelling and that’s pretty much it. The fact that its Chloe’s debut is incredible, it’s so well written and I can tell by the authors note that she put research into it which is just a big bonus! Another big bonus is the queer rep in this<3
Roma & Juliette are amazing, I love them! And damn what an ending! Screaming crying throwing up. I held my breath until the VERY END, I did not see that coming.
It took a while to really get into it but once I did I really liked it a lot!
I already have the sequel at home and cant wait to read that one too

Fun read, but i felt it was more Lets put as many tropes that readers like, other than Lets create characters that have more emotional intelligence than a chair. The plot was ok but most of the time i didn’t know what was happening and the cast of characters always found the right clue, that was some super random shit, and the virus was some made up crap just to fill in the gaps

The book was very slow to start but it was necessary to set up the story. And once it picked up speed, boy I could not put the book down.
I honestly expected to be more grossed out with the gory details but instead I found myself more grossed out by the creepy crawlies mentioned throughout the book. So beware the bugs.
Other than that, I really enjoyed that Chloe Gong ran with the idea of how similar her initial idea was to a Romeo and Juliet story that she went ahead to make the necessary adjustments and ran with it.

Soooo good. That ending? Damn. I can't wait to read the sequel.
These Violent Delights - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have to be honest. I did not think I'd like These Violent Delights as much as I did. I've been wanting to read this for over a yearend man, it did not disappoint. Chloe Gong has swept me off my feet from the first word and I would like to applaud her for that. Congratulations to Chloe Gong for delivering such a masterpiece.
The writing in These Violent Delights is some of my favourite ever. It has a very poetic feel to it, which I loved so much. It works perfectly within the context of the book, it being a Romeo and Juliet remake and such. I might even like it more than the original R&J...
The portrayal of Shanghai was utterly amazing as well. I love how everything is based off of the real life situation of the city back in the day. Small little details such as clothing, the jobs people had, who owned the factories... everything fell into place, everything was just right.
I absolutely adore the characters and everything about them. Something I very much liked was how morally grey almost every major character is. Which makes sense considering the stuff they have to do, but you get my point. I love how Juliette is a badass who will not hesitate to put a bullet through someone, but she's still a female of her time. She'll be wearing a qipao with her guns, and I like that a lot about her. Roma felt a bit more bland to me than Juliette, but I still liked him nonetheless. My favourite characters have to be Benedikt and Marshall, just for the way they interact with each other.
As for the plot, I'm completely flabbergasted, in a good way. I heard many good things, yet I didn't expect it to be this good. The description of the people growing mad and clawing their throats out is disgusting and gory, but my lord, I loved it. It adds a bit of excitement and darkness to a story that, admittedly, wasn't very happy to begin with, but this adaptation really lifts it to a new level.
