I predicted a lot of the major plot beats, but it was still a pretty good time
dark mysterious tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

this was a decent read but i didn’t really like the main characters and i wasn’t that invested in the plot so i don’t think i’ll be continuing with the rest of the books
emotional tense medium-paced

This book should not have been published yet. It reads like a first draft, a second draft at best.

It's as if the author has three words in her vocabulary and uses those over and over again. Communists, gangsters and madness. Storywise it's as if you're reading the same chapter over and over again. Nothing happens in this book. At all. It's boring and dragging and there really isn't a plot.

Juliette is a failed attempt at a female Tommy Shelby and there really isn't much to her. Roma on the other hand was intresting, but all the attention went to how dangerous a gangster Juliette was. This is supposed to be a retelling of Romeo and Juliette, so you would think you'd get at least a bit of romance. Don't go in expecting a retelling.

And then when you finally hustle yourself through this hot mess, the whole issue finally resolved, it all starts over again. The madness is back. She's straight up recycling her plot for the next book.

So please. How did this book become so hyped? This could have been great with a good editor and some guidance from a publisher. It wasn't. Sad, because it had potential.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

would love to go two pages without the author reminding me that it’s inspired by romeo & juliet

3.5 I found the turn of events interesting, albeit a bit predictable. The relationship between the two main characters had potential for much more intensity especially because of the reasons they both had of hating each other. Despite that, the setting sucked me in and it was all in all an enjoyable read.

Occasionally good retelling of West Side Story (not Romeo and Juliet) with several glaring plot holes yet the only one ever cleared up in text is why the Chinese main character would have an English name. Clumsy mystery but decently executed romance, generally deeply ok but mostly frustrating. Also, read this via audio book and the narrator has two voices to use for men and women with a secret third one for Juliet so none of the emotions ever seem to come through. There’s literally a part at the end where someone is meant to cry “no” in deep anguish - a fact I only know because that’s what the text says, it’s certainly not how the narrator delivered the line.
