DID NOT FINISH

I just could not get into the book after reading such a good series before. I did find it interesting and I would like to try and reread it again in the future but I also wanted an easy read for my holidays

I really enjoyed Gong’s writing. It was verbose without being too wordy or pretentious.

I don’t know if you can truly call this a “retelling” of Romeo and Juliette because the tragedy of the original play is that the two young lovers are bystanders in a blood feud that lead to their deaths. Roma and Juliette both actively participate in and contribute to the blood feud and so it loses that tragic element the original play had at its core.

I really don't understand why  it took me sooo damn long to finish this. I really loved. It was such  a fun read,  i just loved the dynamic between Juliette and Roma.

THE GOOD PARTS-
Mercutio/Marshall consistently being the greatest character in every form of R&J, you gotta love it

Absolutely seamless incorporation of queer characters

That moment where Roma says his father could make it look as if they had both killed each other in the middle of Shanghai

All of Juliette's big beautiful brain

THE LESS GOOD PARTS-
The names... oh god the names.

It was really hard to feel immersed in the setting (both the when and where). It felt both real and fantasy but not in a seamless Six Of Crows way but in a disconnected way that felt really jarring as a reader :(

OVERALL-
I am running to the sequel because despite its flaws and knowing how R&J goes, I NEED TO KNOW HOW THIS ENDS!
