This book was super quick to read, and that was due to the writing style being super easy to absorb. Many words were repeated and phrases as well making it feel more like a poetry novella type book. And I think that it may be in part due to the fact that it was translated from French to English. So reading something like this was new to me and very enjoyable. It was a raw and honest story with a perspective like none Id ever read before. I would recommend. Like I said, first time I’ve read something like this. Nothing crazy unheard of— but a unique time period, and perspective of being black and fighting for France in WW1. Overall very enjoyable read

I really liked the beginning of this book and I loved the prose throughout. But around midway I just lost interest and I really hate
a vague ending
. I would certainly recommend for the writing alone.

Alfa, a Senegalese man from a small village, fights for France in World War I alongside his childhood friend. When his friend suffers a slow, agonizing death on the battlefield, Alfa grapples with impulses toward revenge, apology, and sadism. Diop centers an oft-overlooked band of soldiers in this disturbing novella that digs into the trauma of war.
