Cioran’s book of aphorisms centered on the pain of existence was less dark than I expected. The content of this book is undoubtedly dark, with reflections on death and other human troubles. However, there is often a humorous tone and awareness of his fairly extreme position. Here are some aphorisms I particularly enjoyed:
“’What do you do from morning to night?’
‘I endure myself’”
”Years now without coffee, without alcohol, without tobacco… Luckily, there is anxiety, which replaces the strongest stimulants. ”
”Sometimes I wish I were a cannibal – less for the pleasure of eating someone than for the pleasure of vomiting him. ”
While Cioran, as the title suggest, mean that the problem is birth itself, this is not necessarily as bad as it sounds. There is one aphorism which reads:
”When every man has realized that his birth is a defeat, existence, endurable at last, will seem like the day after a surrender, like the relief and the repose of the conquered. ”
While I'm glad I don’t share Cioran’s perspective I enjoyed the wholehearted descent into pessimism and the darker sides of existence. OveralI I estimate that I grasped the majority of the aphorisms but the meaning of many eluded me. I think that is the nature of such a work and I look forward to revisiting Cioran in the future.

Le monsieur m'a l'air bien triste. Je pense que sa femme l'a quitté et qu'ils n'ont pas fini en très bon terme. Elle a peut être été trop honnête ou alors elle s'est tourné vers la religion. En tout cas monsieur, n'hésitez pas à prendre rendez vous avec une psychiatre; ça pourrait vous aider.
