Amazing book, lots of thrilling twists and time jumping in Creon. But abrupt ending!

Finishing the Five Kingdoms series is bittersweet.
Watching Cole go back home and forgetting his adventures in the Outlands after saving the world and defeating Ramarro was almost heartbreaking, but Cole’s goal had always been to get back home.
Brandon Mull ended another series in a fantastic way as he usually does. 5 stars - the Five Kingdoms is a fantastic read I would recommend for anyone.

I had not read the other 4 books recently but there were enough reminders throughout the book of who people were, why they were important. An ensemble book can be hard to write but everyone got their time to do their bit and make things happen. Plot moved because it moved, not because people made mistakes or did stupid things.

WHAT A SERIES!!! I really don't think I understood how compelled I was by the Five Kingdoms, despite it taking a while to come by all of the volumes, until I didn't have any more of it to consume. This was really just something else.

As with Fablehaven and Candy Shop War, Brandon Mull continues to be my most trusted writer of time travel. I absolutely agree with his interpretation, and though it's pushed to the limits in this one, I think it holds.

Skip ahead of this and the next paragraph to avoid spoiling, but my biggest criticism is the end. It's not inconsistent, it's not ill-fitting, but I just don't get it. After all this time doing so much genuine good for the world, this amazing, magical world, a flavorful avatar for the hero's journey, now having all that power, Cole and the others still decide that they'd rather live in mundanity. Certainly it's the escapist in me, but why go back???

I'd have also loved to see more old friends, particularly from Crystal Keepers. I get that it was a departure from the rest, but with Honor, Destiny and the action in Necronum, Mira, Liam, and even the mudball, we got a nod if not an outright blessing from every other kingdom. Zeropolis and its heroes, save for inclusion in memorial lists, seems to have been written off as a dream not unlike the wider Outskirts. It's not that they could have done any more damage than Dalton or Jace, but how nice would it have been to have a re-empowered Outlaw and all those codenamed kids around?

Still, that's hardly so much a critique as a discussion point. With one more novel and one more series, Brandon Mull continues to staple down his spot as my favorite author, even as I pass well beyond double the age range listed on the back.

It was hard to picture Brandon Mull wrapping the many threads of this series up all in one book with a satisfying ending. Yet he did it perfectly.
I loved this series. Such an incredible adventure. Thanks for the epic, friend-filled journey.
