I wanted to stop at 86%. Then I tried to push myself to read the last remainig pages. Worst mistake of my life. There were a lot of points in this book when I wanted to stop, but I was finally done when
after he ( a rapsit and murderer) threatened her to rape and kill her, she told him to run so the ghost of his victim wouldn't kill him. Like ???.

Wasn't good for me. I don't like books written from the perspective of women who lack confidence in themselves, which is true of this narrator, Sarah Piper. I also don't like the romance trope of people who are irresistibly physically attracted to each other without any actual knowledge of each other. The backstory of the ghost in question is also horrible. In conclusion, this story had lots of attributes that, had I known, probably would have prevented me from picking this up in the first place. You've been warned!

This was a mostly enjoyable read, though I do wish it was a little spookier.

Sarah Piper is hired by Alistair Gellis to come along with him to investigate a spirit haunting a barn that supposedly hates men. They are joined by Alistair’s partner, the gruff Matthew Ryder. The trio must unravel the ghost’s secrets before one of them is lost forever.

I quite liked Sarah as a protagonist, and I felt like she was pretty relatable, apart from buying into the whole ghost thing really quickly. Alistair and Matthew were both charming in their own ways as well.

The plot was very fast paced, almost too fast. The haunting wasn’t all that scary, and I think this could’ve been fixed if there had been more time for buildup. The culprits of a certain event were pretty predictable, and I was able to figure out who was responsible for it before Sarah, but luckily she didn’t spent an obnoxious amount of time in the dark.

I rate purely based on enjoyment, so my rating doesn’t mean I thought it was a horrible book or would never recommend it. It just wasn’t for me. I wanted a spooky horror story, and what I got was a historical drama with an often-toxic romance and a lot of tough issues. The story is basically about a ghost who wants revenge for men who raped her. So, beware of trigger warnings for that. Also, the narrator made Matthew sound like Draco’s minions Crabbe and Goyle 🙄
