Let me start by saying I did like this book however I gave it 3 stars because the story fell a little flat and was kind of bland. I liked Sarah’s character I actually saw a lot of myself in her. If I was a woman in the 1920’s I feel that my reactions to her situations would have been similar. For a ghost story it wasn’t very scary and most of the dialog just dragged on a bit. I would have like to of seen more action, maybe more info about Maddy and what she went through while living in the Claire house and where she came from, that part was just left as a mystery. The other books I’ve read from Simone St. James had way more of a wow factor and seem to keep you on your toes from the very beginning. I was almost to page 200 before anything exciting even happened in this one.
Yet the end was good and a little unpredictable so I gotta give it that.

Absolutely loved the premise and the plot, but I found the main character grating. I know the time period means women had to have a quiet strength but i don’t think it had to be so quiet. I also listened to half of it on audio book so it may have been how the narrator presented her. Also why did she fall in love with the male equivalent of drying paint?

I was expecting a haunted mystery. Instead I got a predictable story with absolutely no character development. The FMC reads like an insecure pubescent teen girl going through her boy crazy stage. Sex just comes from literally nowhere. I just couldn’t take this book seriously. Maybe if you’re into horny horror?

Too much focus on the romance, too little ghosts. The plot twist was calculated almost instantly.

Not satisfied this time.
