The big reveal at the end feels a little bit odd, considering the relationship between fact/fiction and stories that the book earlier sets up, but the thematic aspect of it works well enough for me!

Loved "The Storyteller's Death" by Ann Dávila Cardinal! This generational saga set in 1970's Puerto Rico is full of secrets, scandals, and magical realism. The beautiful prose and deep themes make it a must-read. Isla, the main character, shows us the power of storytelling and breaking toxic cycles. The book brings Puerto Rico to life with its rich characters and touches of magic.

This was not on my radar until my library dropped their Readers Choice Challenge. Which is a big reason I love doing different challenges because this was incredible. I’m a sucker for magical realism, family dramas and ghosts!

When Isla’s father dies her alcoholic mother sends her to Puerto Rico every summer by herself to be with her grandmother and great aunt Alma. Summers are full of family, drama and rich stories told by her grandma. The school year in contrast is Isla taking care of her mother and wishing for some attention. When Isla turns 18 her grandmother passes away and Isla is haunted daily by visions of stories her grandmother told.

I loved the way the this was written-complex characters weaving in and out of each others lives with secrets and burdens that finally come out.
