I kinda kept waiting for SOMETHING TO HAPPEN. Nothing really did. But as I waited, I enjoyed the story. And I totally teared up at the end.
As I read I thought That Summer was completely average but as I neared the end I realized what a lovely story of family and coming of age. As an older sister I felt so bad reading about the way I treated my sister when I left for college and my first few years of college when she was still at home. But the sister bond can get through anything as Dessen shows in this book. I felt a real connection and would recommend this book to all sisters!
Take a shot every time she mentions feet. Seriously, it's a lot.
Thought it could've been good but the cussing in Chapter Two made me put it down :(
I do not know how I feel about this one. I usually adore Sarah Dessen's novels. But, for this particular one, it didn't grab my attention as much, seeing as it took me about a week to finish a 200 page book. I like it but I don't at the same time. I was into it but I wasn't all at the same time.
I would prefer to recommend any of Sarah's books that I have read, just not this one. In conclusion, 3 out of 5.

I read it for a graduate paper I'm working on, and I was surprised by the sophistication of the language. It doesn't lower the bar much for the YA reader.
