I should have loved this—Beauty and the Beast retelling with fae? Right up my alley.
But this was so wildly cringe, I just….couldn’t. And that’s coming from someone who is ALSO incredibly cringe. The FMC is giving “not like other girls, I’m quirky!” energy to the point it bypassed endearing and instead just made me roll my eyes multiple times.
And the fact that this was published in *2025* and there was a Harry Potter reference? 🤮🤮 I would have DNF’d right there if this hasn’t been gifted to me. I regret not stopping there.
I couldn’t connect with a single character—they all felt incredibly one dimensional, just existing to tie together one liners and pop culture references vs being developed and actually relevant to the story.
This was for sure not for me, but if cringey characters, dialogue, and incredibly random plot are your vibe—you’ll have a fantastic time!

This book is so much fun! Alix is an adult woman who behaves and thinks like an adult woman. Her life is a mess, but she's trying to improve her self. She's self aware, but not too self deprecating. Daemon is even more of a mess, but he manages. Some of the things he says are so funny. I like that he's gruff and intense. I really like that he spends so much of the book suffering. He wants Alix so badly. He tries to fight it, which just makes it worse. He's not subtle.
The curse is interesting. There is a level of desperation and despair about it that's present throughout. The solution seems obvious, but it takes our heroes until the last minute to get to it.

This book was such a sexy, thrilling, slightly nostalgic, and wholly forbidden ride! King was able to weave together just enough familiar elements from the fairytale stories we know and love with completely new lore and twists that kept me entranced while devouring this story. Daemon was the perfect obsessed and broody hero, longing for what he couldn't have. He definitely forced himself into an impossible situation with his undeniable attraction to Alix, and the sexual tension and immediate passion between them continued to force them together despite their bargain. I loved Alix's sarcasm and wit, and the ending was filled with the perfect amount of drama, angst, and danger. I squealed every time King referenced both Anastasia and Beauty and the Beast in different scenes, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series🖤
Tropes: fated mates, forbidden love, obsessed bodyguard hero with wings, fish-out-of-water heroine, forced proximity, touch her and die, hurt/comfort, Anastasia meets Beauty-and-the-Beast retelling, mistaken identity, hate-to-love-you, one-night stand, found family, STEAMY🔥

Don’t read this book if you don’t want to know exactly what’s going to happen. But if you like that (like me) this is a good one. Just don’t read near others due to chapter pictures.

👻 book 1/? romantasy series of interconnected standalones
🍑 open door spice
👻 dual POVs
🍑 found family
👻 beauty and the beast meets Anastasia
🍑 he’s her bodyguard
👻 themes of cheating (not between MCs)
🍑 forbidden romance
~My Thoughts~
I have had this book on my TBR for SO long and after watching Anastasia last night, I felt like it was time to dive into this 🤭
This book is your classic romantasy. It’s got hot morally grey men, an MMC that will quite literally die for her and a sassy FMC who finds herself in a magical world.
The tension between Alix and Daemon was SO GOOD! There’s so much heated bickering and ‘we shouldn’t but we want to’ moments that had me squealing.
I loved the royal court aspect and the hidden identity / forbidden romance / he’s her bodyguard tropes. They worked so well and really were perfect building blocks for the relationship between the MCs
I fell in love with the side characters, especially Jett and Kastian so knowing that the next book follows Kastian and his FMC (who I will not mention because I don’t want to ruin it but damn was their tension palpable in this book 👀) has me so excited to see where this series goes!
Although there is lore and world building, it’s really easy to follow so if you’re in the mood for a one sitting romantasy then you’ll enjoy this one
