The writing in this book was gorgeous. It was almost addicting to read it, and if the author writes anything else, I’ll be all over it.

But the story was dark, and sad, and filled with content that really should have had warnings. I wish I had learned more about how everything turned out for everyone. There were so many loose ends. I feel very meh about the ending.

But the writing? Gorgeous.

I have to say, I didn’t think I would enjoy this, and then I really did! I initially picked it up because it is set in my hometown, and I thought it would be interesting. I was surprised to find it impressively accurate to my experience in this town and I found it wonderfully reflective upon that experience. I liked reading about some characters more than others, but overall thought it was a good, relatively profound book. It was kind of disjointed, however, and I don’t think the book’s themes and messages would have hit so hard had it been set somewhere I did not know so intimately. I enjoyed this read, though, and not just for the references about my town.
