Charming. I loved it as a teen and have been able to recall the image of Rascal washing a sugar cube well into adulthood. Alone that is a worth a re-read.
Listened to this book in CD format while driving. Personally loved the descriptive narrative of a much simpler time. This is a calm, sometimes funny book about a year in Sterling North's life @ 1918, particularly about his experiences raising a baby racoon. I loved his naturalist descriptions of the flora and fauna with which he spent much time. I marvelled at how his father apparently left him alone for weeks, and their "vacation" to the North Woods. I feel this book is very different from the Disney movie, and wish that I'd had my children listen to or read it first, as they felt that they knew the story already, and thus, didn't want to listen. The book is really much deeper than the movie. Not a compelling read, but enjoyable and thought provoking. Would recommend to nature lovers, lovers of classical literature and parents of nature loving children 3rd-8th grade.
This was a non-fiction book I chose to read because we had to read nonfiction for my 8th grade reading class. Fun...... I know. Yep well, I liked this book. It was a cute story about a boy and his pet raccoon. True story.
I'm so glad this turned out to be more than the animal story I thought it was going to be. The main character is really a superb naturalist and most of the book is about his interactions with nature. I also enjoyed the historical aspect as the setting was 1918 small town Wisconsin. I think many readers will find this story enjoyable for similar reasons or just because they like animal stories. I'd recommend it to any reader six years and older.

Our family loved this true story about a boy and his pet raccoon.
This book is based on the life of Wisconsin author, Sterling North. I enjoyed this book as a child and my kids loved it. They love the raccoon's antics and messes and obsession with sweet corn. They wanted to roam the woods with Sterling and Rascal and were sad the book ended. The audio version was very good.
I know I'm not the intended audience, but I can't leave a book on my shelf unread so its time finally came.
I don't know what I thought this book was going to be about, but a cute little outdoorsy adventure wasn't what I was expecting. Once I realized it was that, I didn't think I'd like it, but I did! It was very unlike anything I'd read in a while and it was nice to just enjoy the simple life alongside Sterling and Rascal for a while.

Can't wait to re-read it again. What a sweet, sweet story.
