Alice In Tumblr Land is a series of fairy tales retold for the jaded internet age where all the characters are kind of like hipsters. Little Red Riding Hood is trying not to meet creepy men. Snow White and Prince Charming are married with difficulties. Rapunzel has cut her hair off and all her friends like her profile picture better. Mulan is having an identity crisis.
Actually most of the characters are suffering an identity crisis or some form of ennui. Since there are a lot of characters and the stories alternate by page, I found it a bit confusing at first, but eventually found that the stories continue. There are illustrations on every alternating page that give the book more of a fairy tale feel. Each page is short, presumably for the attention deprived.
It's all got a dark humor to it that was lost on me at first. It's funny while being depressing. I'm not sure who I know that I'd recommend this too, but I know Tim Manley has a following on the internet.
I was given a review copy of this book by Penguin Books and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for letting me review this book.

Do you like the Fairy Tales for 20 Somethings Tumblr? Well...then you've pretty much read this book. This is extended stories of our favorite fairy tale characters as they hit the quarter life crisis. What happens when Prince Charming tells Snow White he's ready to have a baby? Will Cinderella be able to make it as a photographer? Will Peter Pan EVER grow up? All these questions (and more) are answered. This was amusing, especially for reluctant readers or just as a book for an upcoming trip (so perfect for that flight home for the holidays).
Cute, clever, and even thought provoking. Great to read on a plane since it doesn't require deep attention.
This was a nice, short read. I breezed through the stories, mostly because every page has a couple of lines and a drawing. That is also the downside of this book. I hoped the stories would be a bit more elaborate, or just a bit longer.
It was fun though. Some comments on the 21st century were just really true and Sleeping Beauty was a bit recognizable.
Also, the drawings were great and made the short stories feel a bit more alive.
Still, I'm going to give it 3 stars because it was just so short and I expected more of it.

I thought this would be a collection of short stories exploring classic fairy tale characters in modern times. It’s kind of a short story collection— a bunch of fairy tale characters all have their stories spread throughout the book and they’re told one paragraph at a time. Some paragraphs seem very random. The target audience is definitely millennials. If you’re not a millennial, you probably won’t enjoy this. I’m riiight on the cusp of Gen Z and millennial, and I cringed most of the way through. The end is alright, most characters got their stories resolved and the book gave some words of wisdom, but it was overall wrapped up in a very specific sense of humor.
When I first saw this book it seemed like the funniest thing ever. I love the idea of having characters from the past having to deal with the technology and problems of today. So absolutely a new favourite book, right? Well no, not at all.
I guess that I am quite sensitive when it comes to crude, grown-up humour. The book is filled with that kind of jokes and representations of how old fairy tale people get into trouble, and then they solve those problems. Some of them are funny and made me smile, like Cinderella wearing crocs instead of her glass slippers. But it got so strange and not funny at all after a while. The jokes about mental illnesses made me irritated, sad later on. And some of the stories are just right of negative and not even meant to be funny. I really don't get it. To me, it comes of as ignorant to compile a book that surely was supposed to be uplifting, and then throwing triggering, depressing non-jokes in the middle. What the hell is that good for? I see no point.
Oh well, whatever floats your boat. If you enjoyed the book, great! If you didn't, I feel you. At least I got a laugh about Cinderellas crocs.
