Wow. Echt supergoed

This book had me hooked within the first few pages. I love the setting and the magic abilities and the first part of the book has a pretty good pace. The characters are interesting. Our leading lady, Avry, is tough, headstrong and just pretty kick ass. The men were endearing and I liked watching their relationships change and grow throughout the book.

I had a few issues with the pacing of the plot towards the middle where it dragged. There are a lot of pages where the group is just traveling and traveling with small bits of excitement that weren't really enough. I flipped ahead to skim for when the good parts would be coming up and I kept reading because I really like the Avry/Kerrick pairing.

There was a character death near the middle of the book that I thought was not handled very well. It was very abrupt and the grief that the characters felt didn't seem very genuine or deep. It seemed like it was swept under the rug a bit. I would have felt more for this character is their death was written with more emotion.

I got annoyed toward the end when Avry had to spend so much time with Tohon. He's an extremely annoying villian and his excessive use of the term "my dear" made me roll my eyes so hard it hurt. The very end redeemed the story a bit and I'm excited to find out what happens in the next book.

I probably would have given up on this book if I didn't like the characters so much. That and I love this genre, so maybe I'm biased.

The writing itself is nothing special, but the story drew me in immediately (I went to read the first couple of pages and ended up reading four chapters).

An unusual world, where healers are regarded as a threat and blamed for the spread of plague that has killed so many. Our main character, Avry, is a healer. Hiding from everyone we meet Avry as she is tracked down and captured by those who need her skills.
Packed with action but I still felt the book was slow. I couldn’t really trust those Avry met, and the lack of engagement with some characters meant the ‘big reveal’ didn’t come as much of a surprise.
There were some interesting elements to the story but it really didn’t grip me as I’d hoped it would.

listened as an audiobook from Amber! So good!

3rd read of the series: I’m actually so so basic for a relationship that starts with hate. Also slightly obsessed with Tohon in an unhealthy way. Kinda like Avry but she has annoying ticks :)

Meh, the love story in this was pretty rushed - and also bordering on harassment/assault?

I really liked this book, the story of the healers, and of course the characters were a treat to follow! This book had me turning pages until the end and wiping tears. It really got me emotionally and that's why I love Maria Snyder books, I can really connect to the characters struggling through from start to finish. They grow and develop as the story progresses and that is a true storyteller knockout. I love the study books, glass was good and this one proved to be just as good. Gonna read the sent of magic next and can't wait till December for the final installment. Very pleased with this new series!

I love Maria! I have yet to read a book of hers that disappoints.

DNF at 37% (p. 144/390) This book was just poorly told. Shallow characters, shallow interactions, shallow emotions. I remembered Poison Study being awesome so thought this would be good--the premise is interesting--but it feels like something that was churned out without any effort or thought. If you are in the mood for something to turn your brain off to while you read, it might be fine though.
