While the book starts off pretty high-octane violence and grossness, it never really manages to go further. I found myself desensitized to Quentin's sexual psychopathy, waiting for something that never came. Unlike our protagonist, unfortunately.

I've had my true-crime phases, so the subject matter wasn't as novel to me as it might be to others. I'm of the opinion that extreme horror needs to justify itself with extreme purpose, extreme 'something to say,' if I'm to like it, and I don't know if Zombie really had anything to say other than shock value, gross-out horror. And even that blew its load way too soon (I'm sorry).

If enjoyed Oates’ short story “A good man is hard to find“, this book definitely falls in the same vein. The descriptions in this book are graphic, unflinching, and extremely challenging at times. I will admit to feeling nauseous reading some of the story. However, it is a unique perspective on sociopathy from the viewpoint of an extremely dangerous mind.

Chilling. Disturbing. Read not for the story but the telling.

I just couldn't keep going with this one. You are basically reading the diary of the main character and it's so hard to read I just couldn't keep going. And by hard to read I mean the main character isn't a good writer and isn't great at English. I really like the idea of reading the direct thoughts of the main character but I would rather read from a deranged character that seems more clever than just an idiot that doesn't know what's going on. I dunno if that makes sense. This book isn't bad, it's just not my style.
