This is my first foray into little mermaid retelling-ish fantasy, but it surely won’t be my last. Liesl West is a genius and while it took me a while to get into the book (fantasy books are all like that for me, I have to really wrap my head around the world building and who the characters are), I was obsessed with the double crossing and slow burn of this book. Enna and Soren are made for each other, and I loved watching Enna change from a ruthless death dweller into a true fairytale princess.

This dark The Little Mermaid retelling delivers an engaging mix of action, intrigue, and romance right from the start. The premise itself is compelling, and the execution mostly delivers on its potential. The protagonist was interesting, and the tangled web of duty, deception, and forbidden love kept me invested throughout. The world-building is vivid and immersive, though at times I found myself a little confused by certain aspects of the setting. Given that this is a standalone novel, the world is necessarily limited in scope, so with that, I think the author does a great job making it feel rich and alive despite those constraints. That said, the ending felt a bit rushed—I would have loved just a little more time to let everything play out. Overall, this was a solid and enjoyable read with strong characters and an exciting premise. If you love dark fantasy with morally grey leads, court intrigue, and oceanic magic, this one is worth checking out!

It was pretty okay! I was confused about different aspects of the world at times, but I think that might’ve been a me problem. It was pleasantly entertaining.

A great debut book for this author! I want to know more about this world and the characters now! I liked this twist on little mermaid, it was much more action packed and gruesome at times. The spicy scenes weren’t too crazy, but the scene where they are in their mermaid form was interesting.
I really enjoyed this story and the magical elements along the way! I wish there was more motive behind Odissa and why she wanted the crown, but maybe she didn’t have a very deep motive. I liked hearing more of Enna’s back story and how the blood oath happened. I want to hear more of her story with Soren then.
