Stitching Snow

Fun concept and story! Unnecessary romance subplot though.

What a clever remake of Snow White! 'Snow' is definitely a far superior fairytale princess than the Disney version. (I admit I don't know enough about the original story to compare). She's got agency and the ability to make choices in her own life, in spite of all the obstacles that get in her way. Her romance with Dane felt organic and well developed, which isn't something I can say very often about YA relationships.

It's unfortunate that this book did not live up to my expectations. Sci-fi retelling of Snow White? So up my alley. While the world building was interesting, the story itself dragged and it felt, especially towards the end, that the author didn't really know why her bad guys were bad guys.

There are minor spoilers in this review, but I don’t think it will ruin the book for you.

I loved Sitching Snow! I had high hopes that the story wouldn’t disappoint and it didn’t. It has definitely become a favorite.

I loved the uniqueness of the retelling–the setting, the characters, and the story itself. I love the sci-fi feel, especially with how Lewis incorporates the old Snow White story with her imagination. It helped breathe new life into this classic fairy tale.

The characters were fantastic. Essie was a heroine I could really get behind. She was stubborn, strong, and vulnerable. I related to her in a lot of ways. I also really liked Dane. I loved all the twists that he played a part in. Some of my favorite characters were the drones (aka dwarfs). I loved their personalities, especially Cusser’s and Dimwit’s. (I may have cried a few times in the story that involved the drones.) Essie’s father and Olivia were fantastic villains.

The romance in this one is very slow-building. The two love interests are immediately attracted to each other, but there’s no instalove. In fact, there were times when I was frustrated because there was no kissing. But, then it dawned on me that their first real kiss had to tie into the kiss in Snow White. And, I loved how Lewis did it. It was unique and unexpected.

I love that this book is a stand-alone. I got an awesome story with awesome characters. And, the ending was great. It left a few things open so that if Lewis wants to revisit this world, she can. But, it ends in such a way that there’s no need. It was very satisfying. I really can’t wait to read more books by RC Lewis.

"Brave is being scared and doing what needs to be done anyway."

This was so good. I didn't expect much especially when I realized it was a sci fi retelling so snow white. I'm not a huge Sci fi fan. I loved every bit of the story. Essie is such a fun character. I love her spirit and her ability to tinker with tech and robots. She's so smart and crafty. I hated how she tried to put herself down and make herself invisible, but I also understood it when her story started unraveling. Dane had no idea what he was getting into and got more than what he bargained for. I'm glad that Dane found out the truth, but he shouldn't have judged Essie or her mother harshly before having all the facts. There is always more to someone's story.

4.5 Stars

Admittedly, it was similar to [b:Cinder|11235712|Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)|Marissa Meyer|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388186881s/11235712.jpg|15545385], but at the same time there were so many aspects of it that were different that it's worth reading both!

THIS BOOK IS DOPE AS HELL. I FIRST READ IT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND I REREAD IT RECENTLY AND IT STILL SLAPS. I FUCKING LOVE THIS BOOK. 10/10 WOULD REREAD AGAIN

Great science fiction twist on a fairy-tale retelling of Snow White.

“Every queen has her king.”
I twisted around to raise an eyebrow at him. “Oh, I see. You want the Windsong throne instead of Candara’s?”
He smiled, so he knew I was teasing. “That’s not really it.”
[...] His next words weren’t teasing at all. “Essie, I don’t want you to be alone and scared anymore. That’s all. Royal engagements are always long. If you decide you don’t need me or my help anymore, you can change your mind.”

if this book was somewhat interesting, we'd see dane manipulating everyone, especially silly, naive essie (badass? what a lie. people keep comparing her to princess leia, but essie wishes to be as cunning and as clever as leia is.), to get to the throne of the country that led to the death of his father. but because this book is dull, there is no such cliffhanger.

there is nothing.
the characters are one dimensional, the twists weren't gasp-worthy (the fact that snow's father
Spoilermolested her as a child (?)
came absolutely out of nowhere; it appeared for one chapter and then it wasn't mentioned again?).

there was no chemistry, the romance was based on nothing. dane told essie he loved her, whereas he didn't know shit about her besides the fact that she is a run-away princess. same for essie: he lied to her since the beginning, she helped him (which doesn't make sense. i don't buy the mother excuse and how gentle and caring she was, that eight years later, her daughter would prioritize helping an absolute stranger instead of trying to be safe and not brought back to the palace she escaped.) and then he kidnapped her! so romantique, mes amis!

i wanted to like this book, i really did. but it gave me nothing to root for or to care about. the hype is a lie.
