Stitching Snow

I was quite fond of this. The romance was quite believable, and the story was an interesting take on Snow White. The
Spoilerdonkeyskin elements
were unexpected and kinda icky. There's a reason I avoid that story!
SpoilerOh, baby princesses, no! That's not supposed to happen to you! Bad king, bad!

Essie lives on the icy planet of Thanda far away from Windsong her home planet ruled by King Matthias and evil Queen Olivia and the war with the Exiles because Princess Snow is missing. Essie fixes her mining droids by day and cage fights by night. When a sleek fighter ship goes down not far from her house, Essie attempts to salvage it and instead finds a treasure hunting boy, Dane. He kidnaps her because she’s Princess Snow (‘shocker’) and he needs her to save his people from her father. So now Essie has to decide who she wants to be and what that will cost her.

This is Snow White in space. I really liked the whole concept but was only okay with the execution. Dane was a bit too perfect (but I still liked him) and there were several unanswered questions. Plus the whole hinted at but not really brought into play Snow’s relationship with her dad. That could have been huge but it so got glossed over. I really think that more should have happened on Windsong with her dad and stepmother.

So another loophole for me were the dwarfs/drones in the story. They are a potentially big part in the story, so I was disappointed in their lack. There are so many personalities that could have been done for these drones. There were only two that stuck out and that was Dimwit (as Dopey, I'm assuming) and Cusser (Grumpy) and both were not done as well as they could have been.

This story was good and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a big awesome retelling.

Princess snow and Dane were a couple that I wasnt rooting for right away. I didnt trust it yet but it was fun to read. I loved the storytelling and how it all unfolded.

DO NOT READ THE BLURB!!! Well, unless you want a couple spoilers. I read the blurb, got the book, forgot the blurb and really enjoyed this book. So have this instead:

Stitching Snow is a Snow White retelling you really don't know want to miss. We have a badass princess who wins money in cage fights to get by, seven adorable drones, and a love interest who defies your initial expectations. Well hey, that's what I got anyway.

Essie is a brilliant protagonist. She's gutsy and determined, tough but a little vulnerable, and has her priorities straight. She thinks things through, and while the romance is important, it isn't overwhelming and doesn't make her act like an idiot.

I also loved the drones!!!! There's Dimwit, Cusser, Whirligig, Clank, Clunk, Zippy and Tick Tock, each with their own nutty personalities.

The paving was also brilliant, along with the world building, plot progression and character development. It all worked so well and read so naturally; I only wish I had that skill!

Now I can see where people think it's a little too similar to Cinder, with our princess being a coder and mechanic and there bring a sort of telepathic race that is seen as the enemy, along with the drones. But apparently it was actually written prior to Cinder and just published later so these similarities are purely coincidental. And if I'm being honest, I really didn't care anyway. It was still an original plot and I think Essie is actually a much stronger, badass character anyway, so I definitely don't believe it deserves the flack it's getting.

Now my last point is that I'm actually more inclined to give this one a 4.5, because on occasion I thought the story moved a little too quickly, but I'm edging on the side of a 5 because it was still a fan-freaking-tastic book that I would read again and recommend wholeheartedly.

I'm a fan of fairy tale retellings and this was a pretty good one. I did feel like it started to drag a little bit, but overall, good twists without being too overly dramatic.

Fantastic, futuristic retelling of Snow White. Robots instead of dwarves, it's great.

I liked this one well enough. At first thought it was entirely too similar to Cinder, but not in a good way. However, the more I read the more I found myself really enjoying it and caught up in the story. It took a while, but I'd recommend it to people who are looking for something to read until Winter comes out!

At first, this felt to me so much like Cinder and that's why I wanted to read this. But though the similarities are affluent, I liked this book for its own reasons. Snow white wasn't exactly my favorite fairy tale. I prefer Belle, Cinderella & even Red Riding Hood, sometimes even Aurora. But this Snow was no princess waiting to be rescued and that's quite the person I root for, so we had a pleasant adventure. Nothing too dark, too keeping me at the edge but there's only one Levana, right? I loved this book for what it was. And I might be a little too fond of Dimwit than rational. I wouldn't read a second book if there was one but I like what I read.

Did not care for the heavy handed way the threat of sexual violence was used in this book. Male protagonist was patronizing and irritating within the first 3 chapters. Would not recommend.

CW: Sexual assault

Despite the above, I really enjoyed this story. I'm looking forward to reading [b:Spinning Starlight|24565038|Spinning Starlight|R.C. Lewis|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1454218992s/24565038.jpg|44169306].
